Caufield Mountain
Caufield (Caulfield, Cawlfield) Mountain is three miles northeast of Gatesville in eastern Coryell County. It was named for Tom Caufield, who came to Coryell County in the early 1850s. A school and a Baptist church provided the main focus for the community. Mountain School had fifty-one students and one teacher in 1904. In the 1920s thirty to forty families lived in the Caufield Mountain vicinity. With the completion of U.S. Highway 84 in the late 1930s, Caufield Mountain became more accessible, and gradually more people moved into the area. Several residential subdivisions had been established by the late 1970s, when the Sunday school at the Mountain Baptist Church had an enrollment of 190.
