Granite Shoals
Granite Shoals is on Lake Lyndon B. Johnson seven miles west of Marble Falls in southwestern Burnet County. It takes its name from the granite shoals that were evident on the Colorado River before the construction of Wirtz Dam and Lake Granite Shoals (later Lake Lyndon B. Johnson). Granite Shoals was developed as a lake resort but became an incorporated community in 1966. Its population doubled from 300 in the late 1960s to 634 in the early 1980s and again by 1990 to 1,378. By 2000 the population was 2,040 and in 2010 it was 4,910. In 2005 residents voted to adopt a home rule charter to govern the city, which bills itself as the "City of Parks" due to the nineteen well-maintained public parks located within its city limits. In 2016 the population was estimated at 5,336, and the community was home to a large granite quarry, several churches, an airstrip, one post office, and an elementary school administered by the Marble Falls Independent School District.
