Locust Grove, a farming community twelve miles southwest of Gilmer on the old Big Sandy-Gladewater highway in southwestern Upshur County, was first settled before the Civil War. In the mid-1930s Locust Grove had a church, a cemetery, a sawmill, and a number of houses. After World War II the sawmill closed and the church was disbanded. In the mid-1960s all that remained of the community was a cemetery and a few widely scattered houses.
