Long Mountain, site of the Long Mountain Indian Raid of 1870, stands on the southern shore of Lake Buchanan in extreme eastern Llano County (at 30°44' N, 98°27' W). It was named for landowner Jake Long. The summit, on a large plateau, rises approximately 340 feet above the normal level of Lake Buchanan, to an elevation of 1,366 feet. The local topography is characterized by flat to rolling terrain, locally dissected and covered with soils of sandy and clay loams. Vegetation consists primarily of open stands of live oak and mesquite.
