Mud City

Mud City is on Farm Road 969 four miles east of Austin in eastern Travis County. It was so named because Cottonwood Creek, which flowed through the community, flooded badly after a heavy rain and made dirt roads nearly impassable. Early residents moved to the area in the late 1800s from nearby Hornsby Bend. A small general store at Mud City served as the social center for local farmers. The Mud City claim to fame is that FBI agents once waited there hoping to capture Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. By the 1980s the community's general store was in ruins. A homemade sign in front of one local home proclaimed the number of residents to be two.
