Pope Ranch

Pope Ranch, in northwestern Hall County, was so named because the post office was established on John B. Pope's ranch in May 1909. Originally it was known as Webster, named for J. F. Webster, who settled there in 1889. As a community builder, Webster was largely instrumental in establishing the first schools in that part of the county. He was thought by many to have been a member of William Clarke Quantrill's band. During the Pope Ranch post office's short existence, the community proper had few if any residents. Mail was carried on horseback from Lakeview by Jimmie Lee McMurray. The post office was discontinued in April 1912.
