Proctor Lake
Proctor Reservoir (also known as Proctor Lake), 3½ miles west of Proctor on the Leon River in the Brazos River basin in Comanche County, was owned by the federal government and operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District. The Brazos River Authority, the local cooperative agency, contracted to purchase the conservation storage for $1,707,700 with interest over a fifty-year period. Construction of the earthfill dam began on June 29, 1960, and impoundment of water began on September 30, 1963. The general contractor was Armstrong, Armstrong, and J. H. Ryan and Son, Incorporated, out of Roswell, New Mexico. The reservoir had a capacity of 374,200 acre-feet at the top of the flood-control storage space at elevation 1,197 feet above mean sea level. Spillway crest elevation was 1,162 feet above mean sea level. The drainage area of the Leon River above Proctor Dam was 1,265 square miles. In 1989 the reservoir had a conservation surface area of 4,610 acres and a conservation storage capacity of 59,300 acre-feet. The reservoir served for flood control, conservation storage, recreation, irrigation, and industrial and municipal functions.
