Rock Island
Rock Island is on Farm Road 942 ninety-five miles north of Houston in central Polk County. An agricultural community had already been well established near a rocky gully of Johnson Creek when Carl Bergman, Jim Lewis, and Tom Manry established a small sawmill there around 1900. However, the Rock Island Tie and Lumber Company, like many of the small sawmills of Polk County during that period, operated for only a few years. After the sawmill closed, the little village reverted to its former status as a tiny agricultural settlement.
