Sonoma was an incorporated community within what is now the eastern edge of the city limits of Ennis in southern Ellis County. Sonoma incorporated in the summer of 1949, when its residents felt threatened by Ennis's proposal to build a sewage disposal plant near their homes. At the time of incorporation, Sonoma numbered 205 residents; it grew to 305 by 1952 and to 350 by 1955. Its population was 503 in 1960 and 678 in 1980, when its businesses included four service stations, two stores, two restaurants, a motel, the ISOM Implement Company, and the Ennis Livestock Commission. During the early 1980s, however, Sonoma voters chose to disincorporate, thus returning their neighborhood to its original legal jurisdiction, Ennis.
