Thornton

Thornton is a farming community on State Highway 94 ten miles west of Groveton in western Trinity County. It was named for James D. Thornton, who moved to Trinity County from Mississippi in 1858 with his family and a group of other settlers and established a community on Little White Rock Creek. Around the time of the Civil War Thornton donated three acres for a church and school; in the 1870s two mills were built at the site. The school was consolidated with the Saron and Glendale schools after World War I. In the early 1990s the church, a cemetery, and number of houses still remained at the townsite, and descendants of the Thornton family still lived in the area.
