Lynn Grove
Lynn Grove is a small rural community located east of State Highway 6 about eight miles southeast of Navasota in southwestern Grimes County. Though settlement had occurred in this region, part of the Jared E. Groce survey, as early as the 1820s, the town of Lynn Grove began sometime after the Civil War. Farmers named the community after the abundant linden trees in the area. Settlers included the Muldrew, Bunting, Weaver, Binford, Shine, and Vickers families. A school called West Academy operated in the 1870s and 1880s, and in 1888 residents organized the Lynn Grove Methodist Church. J. H. Muldrew eventually deeded land for a church building, constructed in 1892. The following year a new school was built near the church. In 1913 Lynn Grove School was again relocated to property donated by B. I. Binford. Farmers grew the principal crops of cotton, hay, and corn, as well as sorghum and ribbon cane. Z. S. Weaver and his wife Florence began a successful beekeeping business in 1888 (see BEE INDUSTRY). Hurricanes in 1900 and 1915, however, caused considerable damage to the farming community. Residents in Lynn Grove received widespread telephone service in the 1930s and electrical service in the 1940s. The school closed in 1951 when its rural district consolidated with nearby Navasota. By the latter part of the 1900s Lynn Grove was primarily a farming and ranching community, though some Houston residents built retirement and weekend homes in the area. No population estimates were available in 2000. In 2005 the fourth and fifth generations of the Weaver family continued to operate successful beekeeping businesses, R Weaver Apiaries, Inc., and B Weaver Apiaries, at Lynn Grove.
