Rose City

Rose City is on Interstate Highway 10/U.S. Highway 90 three miles east of Beaumont in western Orange County. The town plat was filed by the East Beaumont Oil and Gas Company Townsite Subdivision. In 1950 the Rose Hill oilfield, which lies south of the community center, was discovered; it has yielded large quantities of crude oil and casinghead gas. The town's voters agreed to incorporate their city in early 1973 by a 77–68 vote. In 1980 the population was 663. The oilfield, along with numerous sand and gravel pits, provides the economic base for Rose City. In 1990 the population was 572. The population dropped to 519 in 2000.
