Hopewell

Hopewell is a church community at the intersection of Farm Road 2820 and a gravel thoroughfare on the edge of the Gambill Wildlife Refuge two miles northwest of Paris in central Lamar County. Little is known about early settlement, but in 1896 the Hopewell common school reported sixty-nine students and one male teacher. The 1936 county highway map identified the school and a cluster of dwellings on dirt roads just south of Lake Gibbons. By 1957 local students attended school in the Central Independent School District, which was consolidated into the North Lamar system before 1970. The 1983 county highway map showed a church at Hopewell.
