North China

Westbury is on the Missouri Pacific Railroad twelve miles northwest of Beaumont in northwestern Jefferson County. The site was originally known as Pine Island, but as the center of that community was moved south to its present location on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad, the former place came to be known as Westbury or North China. By 1885 a small school was serving the community's children, and the building became a center for local activities. The settlement, located on the Thomas D. Yocum grant and inhabited by small farmers who generally raised cattle and hogs, became a stop on the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway, constructed in 1904. A post office was established there in 1907 but was discontinued two years later. Local residents gradually moved eastward to Meeker, and subsequent maps show few traces of development at the old Westbury settlement.
