Pleasant Hill was a rural community located in southern Travis County five miles southwest of Austin on U.S. Highway 81. It was built at the site of Johnstown, which was surveyed, but never developed. In 1903 Pleasant Hill had a one-teacher school with forty-two White students and another one-teacher school with seventy-three Black students. In the late 1940s a church, a school, and several widely scattered houses marked the community on county highway maps. The Pleasant Hill Independent School District was established in 1956 but was consolidated with the Austin Independent School District two years later. By the 1980s the area had been absorbed by the southern city limits of Austin.
